South Beach Diet

Overview:
This diet teaches you how to choose good carbs (whole grains, certain fruits and vegetables) and how to avoid bad carbs. Good fats and lean proteins are also highlighted. You begin by doing a free on-line profile that shows you how the diet can help you reach your goals.

Advantages:

Overview:
Best for those looking for serious weight loss. There's no counting carbs, calories or weighing portions. The most popular plan is the "5 and 1" Plan. Each day consists of five meal replacements and one "Lean & Green" meal, which consists of a lean protein and vegetables and salad.
The foods are delivered to your door, nutritionally balanced and clinically proven.

Advantages:
There are several plans to select from, and the program has been recommended by over 15,000 physicians and clinically proven to be effective at controlling type 2 diabetes.
This is a serious weight-loss plan for serious situations. Many people who have used the program found it enjoyable, as you get to eat 5 Medifast meals per day (with over 50 to select from) and have your "Lean & Green" meal with meat and salad or vegetables.

Atkins Diet

Overview:
This is a very popular plan for those looking for rapid results and a lifestyle change. Acceptable foods are primarily protein and fats with severely limited carbohydrates and processed sugars, and portion size is not an issue.


Advantages:
There is no calorie counting or portion control. Staying below the daily carb intake limit allows you to eat until satisfied, providing you�re eating the allowed foods. These include unlimited amounts of meats, cheeses and other high protein foods. Carbs and processed sugars are strictly regulated. There are many Atkins bars and shakes to augment the diet, but clients are not expected to purchase prepared meals. It�s a very simple, yet potentially drastic lifestyle change for many people.

There are four phases to the program:
Phase One (Induction) A 14 day process, with leafy greens and other non-starchy vegetables being the primary source of carbs.
Phase Two (On-going weight loss) Now begins a gradual addition of specified carbs. Breads and rices are not suggested at this phase.
Phase Three (Maintenance) Carb intake is increased, as long as you are continuing to reach your weight loss goals.

Overview:
The Zone Diet can best be described as a moderate-carbohydrate, moderate-protein, moderate fat diet that has approximately one gram of fat for every two grams of protein and three grams of carbohydrates. This plan is based upon the belief that a diet should be healthy, delicious and convenient. You will be expected to eat 3 meals and 2 snacks daily.

Advantages:
Staying within the Zone will increase energy levels, keep insulin levels stable and improve overall health. Basic plan includes on-line support, recipes, meal planners and shopping lists, as well as an on-line nutritionist. You will learn about "good" fats and carbs, low-fat proteins and how to maintain a healthy balance.

Diet & Expectations:
Portions are controlled to a reasonable size, with no more than 5 hours passing without eating. Every meal or snack begins with a low-fat protein, and then "good" carbs and fats are added. This program is great for those serious about changing their lifestyles and attaining healthy eating habits.

After an initial greater drop, clients can expect to lose 1-2 lbs per week.

Weight Watchers

Overview:
Best if you like a very supportive, structured program with a lot of peer support and encouragement. The focus is on dietary awareness and balance, as well as portion size.
Weight Watchers teaches the basic fundamentals of nutrition, fitness and well-being. There are several plans to select from, and a strong on-line program available. Prepares you for long-term weight loss.

Advantages:
Several programs to choose from gives some flexibility to the program. Group support can be very encouraging and motivational. Clients can go to meetings or follow the plan on-line. E Tools provides an internet companion for meetings. Pre-packaged snacks and foods are available.

Diet & Expectations:
There are several plans to select from:
The Flex Plan, which enables you to enjoy foods you enjoy while making better choices through the point system. You simply eat whatever you wish while staying within your personalized daily points target. There is also the Core Plan, which allows you to enjoy foods from all food groups, without counting points. You learn to select foods from a core list based upon energy density. The lower the energy density of a particular food (such as avocados, potatoes, brown rice), the more satisfied you'll feel, while consuming fewer calories.

After an initial weight loss, clients can expect to loss 1-2 lbs per week. Long term support is available.

Overview:
Best for those with a busy schedule and want food prepared for them. The food is tasty and convenient, with a large selection to choose from. Advantages:
There are several different plans to select from, and the program does a good job of addressing food, body and mind to help sustain weight loss over the long term. Portion control, physical exercise, motivation and life balance are all addressed in weekly consultations at your local center.

Diet & Expectations:

Foods are pre-packaged, portion-controlled and well-balanced. Clients are encouraged to supplement Jenny Craig meals with fruits and vegetables. After an initial greater weight loss, clients can expect to lose 1-2 lbs per week.

Cost & Commitment:
Approximately $299.00 for the premium plan and $70.00 to $80.00 per week for food. Special offers are always available, as are other plans. A typical weight-loss program runs 6-10 weeks.
